The study of hypoxia – low-oxygen waters – in the Gulf of Mexico is critically important to Louisiana, and a Research Competitiveness Subprogram award has allowed a researcher at the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) gather several years of data and conduct analysis of water column nutrient and organic matter concentrations in the areas of the Atchafalaya system that feed the northern Gulf region affected by seasonal hypoxia. This research contributes to our understanding of contributing factors to hypoxia and movement of these conditions through water systems.
