The Louisiana Systemic Initiatives Program (LaSIP) was established during 1991-92 to improve mathematics and science education through a $10 million NSF grant, combined with matching Support Fund dollars from the Board of Regents and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. These monies have been combined with annual resources from U.S. Department of Education post-Sputnik programs, originally labeled the “Eisenhower” program, and now No Child Left Behind (NCLB). LaSIP’s signature effort has been statewide university-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) professional development for K-12 teachers.
Traditionally approximately $1.5 million annually allocated to the Board of Regents through NCLB has been available for LaSIP. Federal funding for the program has been eliminated, and final awards terminate in summer 2018.
