Louisiana ranks first in the nation in aquaculture production, but also first in the production of aquaculture waste, which comprises between 60% and 80% of shrimp, crab, and crawfish. Since the annual impact of the industry is in the hundreds of millions of dollars, it is vital that Louisiana determine ways to utilize this waste. To this end, a BoRSF Industrial Ties Research Subprogram (ITRS) project at Southern University and A&M College is investigating ways to convert waste products into reasonably priced organic fertilizers and feed ingredients.
