At Nicholls State University during July 2011, 40 LaFourche Parish teachers participated in Dr. Keri Turner’s English/Language Arts and adolescent literacy LaSIP project. They participated in learning communities and learned about use of research-based strategies appropriate to the intended goals, collaborations, and data-driven measures of the impacts of student learning. Participants received direct instruction in content reading and writing knowledge needed to successfully deploy literacy strategies in the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum and the upcoming national Common Core, which will be implemented fully in Louisiana in 2014.
