In Dr. Paul Mooney’s summer 2011 LaSIP literacy project, in partnership with the West Baton Rouge Parish School Board and LSU’s Special Education programs, is designed to improve 5th and 6th grade students’ reading achievement through teacher professional development and ongoing support of effective reading practices that target student vocabulary and comprehension development in content courses. Professional development and ongoing academic-year support of participants provided by experienced and credible reading coaches will take place and involve 35 middle school natural and social sciences teachers, middle school special educators, and school-based reading interventionists.
