Over 35 Lafayette and Iberia Parish schools middle school teachers enrolled in Dr. Peter Sheppard’s algebra project at UL Lafayette in summer 2011. Rather than having teachers solely employ traditional approaches to teaching algebra, the LaSIP project team trained the teachers to implement pedagogical approaches that emphasize the use of manipulative and graphical representations of algebra. Participants engaged in pure mathematics skill development (problem solving & math circle concepts) that provided the knowledge necessary for them to convey broader mathematical implications in their own classrooms.
